The Carolina Hurricanes went into Boston and surprised the defending Stanley Cup champions with a 3-0 shutout.
Cam Ward stopped all 47 shots that he faced as Boston threw everything at the Carolina net, but failed to find a way past. Eric Staal, Tuomo Ruutu and Brandon Sutter each struck for the Hurricanes who remain anchored to the foot of the Southeast division.
Only two points above them are the Tampa Bay Lightning who lost at home 2-1 to the Winnipeg Jets. Kyle Wellwood scored at 3:14 of overtime to grab the winner after Victor Hedman's third period strike had cancelled out Blake Wheeler's opener for the Jets in the second period.
The Philadelphia Flyers kept up the pressure on the idle New York Rangers with a 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators at the Wells Fargo Center. Wayne Simmonds scored twice to lead Philly striking in the first with a nifty turnaround shot before adding his second of the night and the Flyers' third with less than five minutes to go in regulation scoring from out in front on the power play.
Also scoring twice and leading his team to the victory was Zach Parise of the New Jersey Devils, as they beat the visiting Montreal Canadiens 5-3. Parise broke a three all tie at 17:16 of the third period and David Clarkson added an empty netter as the Devils picked up their second straight.
The Bruins are 601.00 to retain the Stanley Cup while the Flyers are 601.00 and the Lightning are 601.00.
