Devils edge Rangers
February 08, 2012 15:18:27 UK
David Clarkson netted the only goal of the game in the first period as the New Jersey Devils beat the New York Rangers.
Martin Brodeur stopped all 30 shots that he faced as the Devils picked up their fifth consecutive victory to move into fifth place in the Eastern Conference rankings.
The game started with a fight as soon as the puck was dropped, a signal from both coaches of their intent to play a physical contest and the Rangers had a goal waved off with seconds to go in regulation as goalie interference was ruled.
The Devils are 2.20 to win the Eastern Conference, with the Rangers 1.71 and the Washington Capitals 4.40.
In Montreal the Canadiens had to go to their eighth skater in the shootout before taking a 3-2 win over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins, while the Philadelphia Flyers also lost in extra-time falling, 1-0 to the New York Islanders.
No such requirement in Washington where the Capitals blanked the Florida Panthers 4-0 to take over the lead of the Southeast division.
