Cardinals win game three
October 13, 2011 14:42:24 UK
The St. Louis Cardinals scored four in the first inning and hung on for a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers to take a 2-1 series lead in the NLCS.
Jon Jay, Albert Pujols and David Freese all hit RBI doubles and Yadier Molina's bases-loaded double play ball also drove in one as St. Louis battered Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo (0-1) in the first inning.
Gallardo, the 25-year-old native of Michoacan, Mexico, surrendered the four runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out two over five innings.
The Brewers scored two in the second and one in the third, but were unable to push across the tying run as St. Louis held the Brewers to six hits on the evening.
Chris Carpenter (1-0) continued his excellent form striking out three over five innings and allowing three runs on six hits and three walks.
The big bats of the Brew Crew were relatively silent with only Mark Kotsay's third inning solo shot being of note.
The Brewers are 2.33 to level the series with a victory in game four, with the Cardinals 1.69 to win and move to within one win of the World Series.
