England's Mark Selby is delighted to have reached number one in the world with a thrilling win over Mark Williams in the final of the Shanghai Masters.
Mark Selby is the new world number one after a victory in China.Selby, whose only previous ranking title came at the 2008 Welsh Open, won the last three frames of the match to edge out Williams 10-9 and in doing so took over from the Welshman at the top of the rankings.
The 'Jester from Leicester' said after his victory: "It's a great feeling to be world number one, all I wanted to do was to get to the top of the sport.
"But I have to keep up the hard work because others will want to get ahead of me."
Selby is 1213.00 to win his first world title in 2012, with reigning champion John Higgins 1213.00 to retain his crown.
Williams, who had said earlier on in the tournament in China that his main focus was another world title rather than staying at number one, is 1213.00 to win a third Crucible crown next year.
Meanwhile, Selby was also pleased to have won only his second ranking title in six finals, adding: "It's a big relief to win my second ranking title because I'd lost a few finals.
"Every time I got to a final I came up against someone playing well."
