Mark Selby is determined to land one of snooker's major prizes. The 28-year-old opens his campaign at the Barbican against Welshman Ryan Day on Sunday and Selby is 1.25 to reach round two, where he could well face the in-form Stuart Bingham.
Selby reached the semi-finals of the UK Championship four years ago, while he was also runner-up in the World Championship in 2007 and he would like to land a major prize sooner rather than later.
"They are the two main events that I am always aiming to win," Selby said. "Everyone sees them as the pinnacle of our sport - it would be nice to win both."
Meanwhile, defending champion and reigning world champion, John Higgins, has voiced his concern that all matches up until the semi-final stages will be over a reduced 11-frame format, which he feels could lead to more upsets.
The Scot added: "You always associate the UK Championship with the best of 17. That it's been cut to 11 is very disappointing."
2010 world champion Neil Robertson, is also worried that shorter matches could have a big impact, saying: "You don't really have to do a lot wrong if your opponent plays very well on the day."
Selby is 1213.00 to win the UK Championship, with Higgins 1213.00 to defend his crown successfuly, while Robertson is 1213.00.
