Waratahs appoint Elsom new captain

The NSW Waratahs have announced that their Australian international Rocky Elsom has been handed the responsibility of leading the club in the upcoming 2012 Super Rugby season.
Elsom, who spent the last two years with the Brumbies, came back for a second spell with the Waratahs this year and he has been handed the club captaincy straight away.
Waratahs coach Michael Foley expressed his delight after being reunited with Elsom and then said that appointing the Wallabies veteran as former captain Phil Waugh's successor was a no-brainer.
"We have spent the past months in discussions with senior players in an effort to determine the best man for the job. There will never be a perfect replacement for retired skipper Phil Waugh however after defining the role and what it was the players expected and wanted from a captain, Rocky was the standout candidate," Foley said.
Elsom, who has played 75 matches for Australia at international level, is not expected to be back in training instantly due to his injury status. He is currently nursing a hamstring issue and is not likely to be fit for the start of the new season.
The Waratahs will kick off their 2012 Super Rugby campaign with a home clash with the Reds on February 25.
Reds are 11.00 to win the 2012 Super 15 title. Crusaders can be backed at odds of 3.75, while Blues are available at 5001.00.
