Mathers makes fresh start

Richard Mathers says he is relishing the opportunity for a fresh start at Wakefield, after being told by parent club Castleford that his services would not be required in 2012.
Full-back Mathers has another two years to run on his contract but admits that he does not know what the future holds.

I just want to enjoy this year and we'll see what happens.

"I signed a three-year contract and played quite well last year. But I was told that, no matter what, I wouldn't feature this season. I was told to stay away and, after three or four weeks of pre-season, I was allowed to train on my own with the conditioning staff," said Mathers, who began his career with Leeds and has also enjoyed spells with Warrington and Gold Coast Titans.
"You spend a lot of time on your own and it was a good job I've got a good family around me, people I could talk to and let my emotions out. It was quite stressful. You do a lot of soul-searching, wondering what you've done wrong.
"But I couldn't find a reason and I still can't. I had 25 friends there all questioning it as well. I'm not a trouble-maker. At Wakefield I feel like I'm wanted and that's refreshing to know. I just want to enjoy this year and we'll see what happens."
Mathers is one of many new players to arrive at the Wildcats during the close season, and the new look-squad will be tested for the first time when they visit Super League new boys Widnes this Friday. The Wildcats are 2.00 to win while Widnes can be backed at 1.80.
