Whitmarsh: Hamilton one of the fastest

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh has backed former world champion Lewis Hamilton for glory in 2012, calling his driver 'one of the fastest we've ever seen'.
Hamilton came in for criticism for his performances last season, but Whitmarsh has defended his man in the strongest possible terms.

He's a truly brilliant racing driver - one of the fastest we've ever seen.

"Lewis won three Grands Prix in 2011, one of only three drivers to have won more than a single race," Whitmarsh commented. "The other two were Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button.
"Again, just as most teams have never and will never win six Grands Prix in a single season, as McLaren did last year, it's equally true to say most drivers have never and will never win three Grands Prix in a single season, as Lewis did last year.
"He's a truly brilliant racing driver - one of the fastest we've ever seen. That's why, throughout last year, we were always keen to reassure him we were backing him 100 per cent."
Hamilton is 3.75 to be crowned world champion for a second time in 2012, with Red Bull's Vettel 3.75 to seal a hat-trick of titles, while McLaren are 1.83 to be crowned constructors' champions.
The season gets underway in Australia on 18th March, with 20 races scheduled in a campaign which finally ends in Brazil in late November.
