Fiorentina chairman Mario Cognigni has revealed that he failed with a bid to sign West Brom midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu in the summer.
Youssouf Mulumbu has spent almost three years with the Baggies.La Viola also attempted to snap up Belgium international Axel Witsel, who eventually opted to move to Benfica from Standard Liege and Brazilian midfielder Arouca, who decided to stay at Santos.
Mulumba joined the Baggies, initially on loan, in February 2009 from Paris St Germain and has gone on to find the net ten times in almost 100 first-team appearances for the club.
Cognigni said of his summer targets: "In the summer we considered Axel Witsel, Mulumbu and Arouca. For many reasons we could not take them."

Meanwhile, Cognigni expects Riccardo Montolivo to leave the club as the 26-year-old's current deal expires at the end of the season.
