Gregorio Manzano had been in his second stint as Atletico Madrid boss.Both Villarreal and Atletico Madrid have sacked their managers after being knocked out of the Copa del Rey this week.
Juan Carlos Garrido was axed by the Yellow Submarine after they were beaten by Mirandes while Atletico parted company with Gregorio Manzano after losing to Albacete.
Villarreal are currently 17th in the Primera Division and lost all six of their Champions League group matches. Garrido, 42, had been at the club for 14 years in various capacities and took charge of the first team in February 2010.
Villarreal finished seventh in La Liga in 2009-10, before clinching fourth spot last term as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Meanwhile, Atletico's 2-0 defeat at home to Real Betis at the weekend left them tenth in the league table although they have won through to the last 32 of the Europa League. Manzano, 55, was in his second stint as manager of Atletico having signed a one-year deal in June. He had led the club to a seventh-place finish in 2003-04 and has managed 16 clubs during his career.
