Stevens returns to the Gelsenkirchen club for a second spell, having been in charge of Schalke between 1996 and 2002, when he led them to a UEFA Cup success and two DFB Pokal titles.
Since leaving Schalke he has enjoyed spells in charge of Hertha Berlin, Koln, Roda JC Kerkrade, Hamburg, PSV Eindhoven and Red Bull Salzburg.
Schalke are currently fifth in the Bundesliga standings and are 151.00 to be crowned German champions this season, with Bayern Munich 101.00 and reigning champions Borussia Dortmund 1.001.
Meanwhile, Hamburg sporting director Frank Arnesen has confirmed that he held talks with Stevens over the managerial vacancy at the Imtech Arena, before opting against appointing the experienced Dutchman.
Arnesen told the club's official website: "I have always said that I wanted to talk to numerous candidates. After talking to Huub Stevens, I decided that it would not work out.
"Without wanting to go into any details about our talks, I can only say this much - I want a coach who is 100 per cent committed to our club. That is the feeling that I need."
Schalke and Hamburg meet at the Imtech Arena on Sunday, with the hosts 2.80 to win the game and Stevens' charges 2.37 to triumph in his first game back on the bench.
