New South Wales are still in with a chance of making progress after they became the first side to defeat the Mumbai Indians in the ongoing Champions League T20 tournament.
The Australian club inflicted a five-wicket defeat on their Indian counterparts in a result that has blown Group A wide open. The group is still being led by Mumbai, who have five points to their credit, but this result has given a chance to NSW, the Cape Cobras and the Chennai Super Kings to book their place in the knockout stage of the competition.
Mumbai won the toss and chose to bat first but their top order completely collapsed and they could only muster 100-7 in their allotted 20 overs. New Zealand's lower order batsman, James Franklin, who is not known for his batting, top-scored for the Indians with 42 runs off 51 deliveries. Stuart Clark (2-15) and Steve O'Keefe (2-18) were the pick of the bowlers for the Aussies.
When NSW came out to bat, their top order struggled too and at one point they seemed to be in real danger of losing the match when their first five wickets went down for only 28 runs. But Steve Smith (45 off 47) and Ben Rohrer (26 off 28) played sensibly and made sure that their club got the all-important victory.
New South Wales are 2.20 to defeat the Chennai Super Kings.
